Our partner, Friends of Foster Kids (FoFK), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in Macomb County, Michigan. I was amazed to learn that each year, about 900 children enter foster care in Macomb County alone, and many of them never get to experience the joy of receiving a gift at Christmas. This was heartbreaking for me. I think about the Christmases I have spent with my family, and they were so joyful. I believe that every kid deserves this joy. This is how Bag of Joy was formed.
I visited FoFK and met Ms. Theresa Toia, the founder of this wonderful charity. She showed me around her center. I saw so many people volunteering to help wrap gifts. I was told I could volunteer once I turned 15. So, in 9th grade, once I turned 15, I was able to volunteer! However, she told me I could start helping by taking wish lists and bringing those items in.
Over the past few years, I have loved meeting Ms. Toia. She inspires me and has shaped my wish to help others. I am proud to partner with such an incredible organization that makes such a positive impact on so many lives right here in Michigan. Thinking about the smiles on the faces of the kids who receive the gift items I contribute makes me so happy. Partnering with FoFK has given Bag of Joy a chance to spread joy locally.
